Obstetrics is the field of medicine dedicated to the care of the pregnant woman culminating in the safe delivery of her child/children. Our physicians share the same philosophy in that Obstetrics is a calling more so than a career choice, and encompasses all the hours/days/months that a child might choose to enter this world.

The obstetric division of the Women's Clinic Ltd. of West Reading, Pennsylvania

As western medicine has continued to grow and evolve, so has the field of Obstetrics changed and developed. One goal for our patients, both locally and across national and cultural boundaries, is to conceive a child both when desired and when a woman is in optimal maternal health/nutritional status. The next goal is for new pregnancy to progress naturally and normally to full term. Many women can and do achieve these two goals without direct medical intervention, and the Obstetrician's joy is to be a delighted participant in a birthday!

Some women, however, have issues of maternal or fetal health that require observation and possible intervention/assistance to achieve the same desired outcome of healthy motherhood. Our mission and goal at Women's Clinic, Ltd. Obstetrics is to provide that required attention to detail and expertise.

At Women's Clinic, Ltd., in our office dedicated to Obstetrics, you will immediately notice why we are regionally known for our quality of care. First and foremost are our skilled doctors, physician assistants/nurse practitioners, experienced ultrasound and fetal testing technicians, nursing staff and our welcoming receptionists. These specialty trained staff members add the compassion and personal touches behind the medicine. They are dedicated and honored to be part of your prenatal and childbirth experience. Second are the advancements in technology and in-office services available to our patients. Women's Clinic, Ltd. is one of the few practices that offer in-office ultrasounds daily. Prenatal ultrasounds can be scheduled with an upcoming appointment (if recommended) or they can be performed as needed. The ultrasound room allows for the patient's partners, family members or soon to be siblings to enjoy viewing the baby. We have state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment and a large flat screen monitor designed for you to see every detail. Our technologist, Michele Nagle, is ARRT and RDMS board certified. Michele recently became certified to perform Nuchal Translucency ultrasounds. Nuchal Translucency ultrasounds assist in early detection of Down's Syndrome in fetuses. They are performed between 11 and 13 weeks of gestation. Dr. Jean Payer is credentialed to interpret the results of the Nuchal Translucency ultrasounds. A unique feature is that fetal Non-Stress Tests (NSTs) are performed in our office. The test involves attaching one belt to the mother's abdomen to measure fetal heart rate and another belt to measure contractions. Movement, heart rate and “reactivity” of heart rate to movement is measured for 20-30 minutes. Many women are forced to spend hours in the hospital for a NST or they may even be admitted for monitoring. At Women's Clinic, Ltd. Obstetrics you can have your NST with the staff and physicians that have been with you thru your entire pregnancy in an environment you've become accustomed to.

Some of the high risk maternal conditions managed by Women’s Clinic, Ltd. Obstetrics include chronic hypertension, pregnancy induced hypertension or pre-eclampsia, autoimmune diseases, thrombophilia, previous gastric bypass surgery, maternal metabolic disorders, incompetent cervix, epilepsy, infection, and diabetes of all types including gestational diabetes, adult-onset or Type II diabetes and Type I diabetes. We will manage heparin therapy and insulin therapy, both standard and insulin pumps.

One area of obstetrics management requiring considerable attention is that of multiple gestations. Successes in the sister field of reproductive gynecology have been marked, leading to a noticeable increase in the number of twins, triplets, and high order multiple gestations in our society today. Meticulous attention to detail and strategic intervention when necessary can offer our patients optimal pregnancies and newborn deliveries.

Equally important advances have occurred in another closely related field. Neonatology is the medical care of the high risk newborn. Working hand-in-hand with our colleagues in the neonatal field, we offer a seamless approach to the care of these little patients, throughout pregnancy and into the newborn period.

Some of the high risk maternal conditions managed by our group include chronic hypertension, pregnancy induced hypertension or pre-eclampsia, autoimmune diseases, thrombophilia, previous gastric bypass surgery, maternal metabolic disorders, epilepsy, infection, and diabetes of all types including gestational diabetes, adult-onset or Type II diabetes and Type I diabetes. We will manage heparin therapy and insulin therapy, both standard and insulin pumps. Our in-office testing center offers fetal non-stress testing and ultrasound assessment for these and other pregnancies.

Our Obstetric office is located in Suite 380 of the Doctor's Office Building. You can reach us by calling 610-374-4483. A triage nurse is always available to assist you if you have a question or concern. We are pleased and honored to be your obstetric care providers.
